Geocaching

Geocaching is a funny game which consists of hiding and finding treasures (caches) distributed worldwide, using a GPS.

The description of the place where each treasure is located and its coordinates are published on the following web: www.geocaching.com, but it is not easy to find them, since this prevents the treasures are destroyed or stolen.

Our recommendation for this week has been making a tour of castles in the world, living the history which happened in each of them, remembering the legends that surround them.
Sometimes it is difficult to collect all this information on time before the trip, so the plan that we recommend you is that if you know the story of a castle and his fables near where you live, play geocaching and leave a cache with this information. It is even better if you leave a photo or a drawing that recreates the life at that time.

This way you would promote the historical heritage of your environment, would also help other travellers and you will writer of a huge travel book which pages will be distributed throughout the world.

Do not forget to check regularly that your "treasure" continues in the same place where you left it and is in good condition.

You can see the comments of all those who have found and read your cache in the same web of geocaching.

The discovery of the week to arrange a castles route around the world is in reality 3: a book and two links.

The book is “Castillos 1.001 fotos” (Castles 1.001 photos). You can buy it on Amazon, it is a small and manageable book to comfortably accompany your travels.

The links are:
a) Legends of Castles of Europe (it is only in Spanish).

b) Castles secrets and legends (it is only in English).

We saw them and liked a lot!

Castles

We propose you a time travel, following the steps of the history that castles and fortresses, distributed worldwide, relate us. These witnesses of the past narrate silently, through its stones, what happened inside and around them, and sometimes also they give us some legends and fables that take us to other times, some ones real and others mythical.

Plan a route visiting only castles during several days. Select the most emblematic ones, which move you to the medieval times where the events happened, immerse yourself in its history, reliving at each place his characters, events and customs, and see how you will feel like you've been part of the that. Do not forget to include the legends that are part of each location to give a magical touch to your trip.

To arrange it you can see the following link of wikipedia, which sorts the castles per country:

Then find them on Google maps, where, on the satellite view, you'll see photos of some travellers.

Finally, look for its history and legends, make your travel journal, many pictures and share it with everyone posting it on online travel forums.

We did several castles routes by different countries. Here you have some pictures to encourage you to live this experience:

Spain:

France:

Scotland:

"Manhattan" cocktail

The official story says that the cocktail "Manhattan" was created in New York, at the Club Manhattan in 1874 when Jenny Jerome, who later became Lady Randolph Churchill, mother of Winston Churchill, hosted a party for a friend of his father, Samuel Tilden, who had just been elected governor of the state.

She gave instructions to the barman to create a special cocktail for the occasion. This cocktail liked so much at the party and the audience began to demand it in other bars to become one of the most famous cocktails in the world.

The ingredients are: whisky, Martini rosso and angostura. Garnish it with a red cherry and orange peel.

To drink this cocktail you should start slowly and enjoy it but never let it warm up.

Pumpkin pie

One of the most traditional dessert at Thanksgiving is the pumpkin pie.

Here you are the recipe:

Ingredients for the sweet dough:
  • 225 g plain flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 150 g butter
  • 75 g icing sugar
  • 1 free-range egg
Ingredientes for the filling:
  • 700 g mashed, cooked pumpkin passed through a sieve
  • 200 ml evaporated milk
  • 3 free-range eggs, beaten
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 200 g dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Nutmeg to grate

Method:

1) Preheat the oven to 180c/gas mark 4.

2) For the pastry. In a food processor mix together the flour and sugar then add the butter, and whiz until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Empty into a bowl then beat together the egg and slowly add, mixing until the pastry forms a ball. Wrap tightly in cling film and refrigerate for two hours.

3) Turn the oven down to 170c/gas mark 3.

4) Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to a 2mm thickness. Use to line a 28cm tart ring placed on a baking sheet. Rest the lined tart ring in the fridge for 20 minutes.

5) Line the tart ring with greaseproof paper and fill with baking beans to keep the base's shape, and bake blind for about 20 minutes. Remove the greaseproof paper and baking beans and return to the oven for 5-8 minutes or until the pastry starts to turn golden brown. Remove from the oven and brush with egg yolk and allow to cool.

6) Turn the oven down to 160c/gas mark 1.

7) For the filling. Bring the cream, sugar and spices to the boil then quickly whisk onto beaten eggs. Add the pumpkin mix and gently beat in until everything is mixed.

8) Fill the pastry case with the pumpkin mix. Carefully place in the middle of the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes or until the mix appears set but not too firm. Remove from the oven and cover the surface liberally with grated nutmeg.

9) Allow to cool to room temperature before serving.

Garlands with message

Do you already know how you will decorate your home to celebrate Thanksgiving? Here we recommend an idea to do it yourself that will keep you entertained at least for an hour: garlands with messages of thanks.

Everyone can choose the desired message: "Be grateful", "Thanks", "Family", "Friends", etc..

To make the garland, draw an autumn leaf on a sheet to serve as a pattern and cut the felt sheets depending on the number of letters contained in your messaged. Use felt with typical autumn colors, like green, red, yellow and brown.

To make the letters of the message, write the message on a sheet, cut out the letters and use them as a pattern to make them with foamy. Then, stick with glue the letters on the sheets of felt.

Finally, glue the sheets with letters in two strands of yarns and the garlands are ready. You can put them in the entry of your house, in the fireplace or on any wall.

Thanksgiving Day

The Thanksgiving Day is a traditional celebration of the United States and Canada. In the United States it is held every year on the fourth Thursday of November and in Canada on the second Monday in October.

The origin of this celebration was to celebrate with a feast the good harvest obtained and over time it has become a regular tradition.

Most people in United States celebrate this event with family gatherings in their homes where they prepare a feast. The traditional main course for dinner is a great roared or baked turkey. This turkey is usually accompanied with a stuffing made from cornbread and sage and it is traditionally served with jelly or cranberry sauce.

That same day, a parade takes place on the streets of Manhattan organized by Macy's store chain that attracts millions of people to the Broadway street to see the huge giant gallons and the performances of the guest artists.

Most businesses and offices are closed on this day. However, some stores, shopping centers, restaurants and bars stay open.

The following Friday to this event is the traditional opening of the christmas' shopping season. This day is known as Black Friday which stores and shops offer bargain prices and many people go from early morning.
